Mobileway Enables Mobile Operators in Hong Kong to Launch International SMS services.
Service will enable mobile operators to allow their subscribers sending of SMS overseas seamlessly regardless of
networks.
Mobileway, the world's largest SMS network interconnectivity provider, announces today the launch of International
Inter-Operator Short Message (IOSM) environment to mobile subscribers in Hong Kong.
With coverage of more than 80 mobile operators worldwide, Mobileway's international connectivity enables subscribers
in Hong Kong to send SMS messages overseas to any country without geographical boundaries.
Mobileway has launched its services with 2 major operators in Hong Kong and is currently in the final
stages of negotiation with the other remaining operators to launch the service in early 2002.
Mobileway provides a cross-technology boundaries network, which implies that subscribers are able to send
messages
regardless of using different mobile networks like GSM, TDMA or CDMA, to stay in touch via SMS with their friends,
families and business counterparts who are overseas.
This service will greatly benefit the community of foreign workers in Hong Kong who wish to keep in touch
with their families back home.
This service will also benefit the Hong Kong community working in China, as it would be a more cost-effective communications medium than IDD
calls.
Cyrille Even, General Manager and Vice President of Mobileway Asia Pacific, said,
"In the past, Hong Kong mobile subscribers were restricted to sending messages within the territory itself.
With Mobileway's seamless international connectivity with mobile operators, we are able to build an international IOSM environment,
which will enable mobile subscribers to send SMS messages across all countries.
As far as we are concerned, we are the first in Hong Kong to provide such a service."
SMS text is now achieving critical mass in many international markets. According to the GSM Association, Asia Pacific is experiencing rapid
growth of SMS, accounting for almost 3 billion SMS messages a month. Regions with the highest traffic volumes include China, Hong Kong,
Singapore, Australia, Philippines and New Zealand. There are currently 5.4 million mobile phone users sending text messages everyday in Hong
Kong. The Association also predicts a total of 250 billion text messages will be sent in 2001.
