MSN Malaysia and Celcom In Partnership To Offer MSN Hotmail via Two-Way SMS
New service allows customers to access Hotmail Anytime, Anywhere
31 October 2002 Kuala Lumpur
MSN®, the network of Internet services and the world’s most popular destination on the Web, and Celcom Malaysia’s premier communications provider, officially launched a strategic mobile services alliance today.
MSN Hotmail and Celcom customers will now be able to access their MSN Hotmail® accounts via two-way short message service (SMS). With this service, users of MSN Hotmail will have the option to receive e-mail sent to their MSN Hotmail accounts by SMS on their mobile phones whenever and wherever they are. They will also be able to reply to those e-mail messages directly to the sender’s inbox via SMS as well as perform other common tasks directly from their phone. The service is powered in part by Mobileway, a global leader in managing and monetizing mobile transactions.
With this strategic alliance, Celcom will be the first company in Malaysia to offer its customers MSN Hotmail services via two-way SMS technology. The charges for each SMS received will be RM0.50 and RM0.15 for each SMS sent. Both Celcom and MSN believe that the service will have considerable take-up given its appeal and convenience to customers.
The alliance with Celcom is the first SMS deal MSN has announced in Malaysia and is part of the MSN global strategy to provide mobile consumers with its best-of-breed services, such as MSN Hotmail and relevant integrated MSN features, through a reliable link to the wireless Web. The announced alliance follows the recent release of MSN Mobile 4.0, the latest version of MSN Mobile’s platform that delivers customisable communications services to interactive pagers, mobile phones and handheld devices. MSN Hotmail is the world’s most popular free Web-based e-mail service and has more than 110 million users worldwide, with nearly 1 million users in Singapore alone.
“Mobility, flexibility and connectivity is central to Malaysians’ lives today, and with this alliance we are extending our capability to offer mobile carriers to provide their consumers with access to MSN Hotmail anywhere in the world,” said MSN Asia’s General Manager Celia Chong-Wu.
“The statistics for the market also support our initiative. There are few places in the world where millions of SMS are sent in a month, and where SMS has become so much a necessary part of people’s lives. Tremendous opportunities definitely exist in this market,” he added.
“With MSN communications services in enormous demand, this alliance also makes these services readily available to people on the move. Consumers want the ability to make the most of their PC-based communications services any time, any place and on any device. With Mobileway, we have created the opportunity with Celcom to offer a joint value-proposition to our customers.”
Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Facing Group, CY Chin said: “Today, we see an evident affluent in lifestyles. In this fast paced age of modern sophistication, the demand for services and products that spell convenience is increasing at a phenomenal rate. Similarly the demand for timely information and connectivity.
As such, Celcom, whose goal is to delight our customers in all aspects of our service sees the popular and familiar MSN Hotmail as a product that will enhance the lifestyles of customers. It is a product that enables Celcom to deliver the promise of convenience to our customers, an essence customers can be in touch (with their Hotmail) anytime and any place,”
“We are pleased and excited to be part of this important milestone deal with Celcom and MSN Hotmail. The confidence that Celcom demonstrated in deploying the MSN Mobile service with Mobileway further shows our capability for point-to-point secured delivery and our abilities to monetize mobile transactions. Mobileway is keen to be a key partner in being able to bolster Celcom’s position in Malaysia as well as regionally, providing value-added SMS-based services to suit differing customer lifestyles,” said Cyrille Even, General Manager and Vice President of Mobileway Asia Pacific.
