MOBILEWAY MOBILIZES LOLLAPALOOZA 2003 - Common Short Code across 11 US Wireless Operators
Mobileway, the Mobile Messaging Leader Enables Lollapalooza’s 2003 Interactive Playing Field Through a Common Short code across 11 US Wireless Carriers
1 August 2003 Los Angeles, USA
Mobile text messaging in the US took another major step forward this summer when global messaging leader, Mobileway, enabled mobile games and quizzes using a common short code across 11 US Wireless carriers at the Lollapalooza 2003 concert tour.
The Lollapalooza concert tour started on July 5th in Indianapolis and will continue across the US through August with a final concert on the 24th in Portland, Oregon.
The company worked closely with US wireless operators and the promoters to put in place 8 common short codes on the Verizon, AT&T Wireless, Cingular, T Mobile, Nextel, Alltel, US Cellular, Leap Wireless, Dobson Communications, Quest Wireless and Boost Wireless networks.
This enables Lollapalooza 2003 attendees using these wireless carriers to send and receive mobile messages from the Lollapalooza Mind field games.
MindField at Lollapalooza www.lollapalooza.com enables the concert goer to participate in voting, quizzes and polls at the concert venues by responding to questions given on the giant TV screens at the venues, as well as playing the Hunter Prey game where a number of people who have subscribed to the service are randomly picked each hour. Half of the people are sent a task via SMS such as: “Quack like a duck”. The other half are sent a task “Find someone that is quacking like a duck”. If they find each other, they each send an SMS text message to a short code identifying themselves so that they can receive a prize.
As part of the tour promotion Mobileway also enabled a live SMS quiz for Lollapalooza on the Jimmy Kimmel late night chat show on ABC Television which was co-hosted by Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction. Viewers were asked to answer one multiple choice question each night on June 17th, 18th, and 19th by sending an SMS text message with a, b or c to Mobileway. If a viewer correctly answered all 3 questions they won tickets to a Lollapalooza concert.
Jim Queen, Vice President of Mobileway’s U.S operations explained the significance of Lollapalooza , “This is the first time a cross carrier SMS based set of wireless entertainment services has been run with a common short code at concert venues across the US and demonstrates the real value in arena mobile entertainment”
“This is the first time SMS based votes, quizzes and games have been made available during a concert tour in the US and we are very happy with the fans’ response. Our thanks to Mobileway for its role in successfully enabling these services for us” concluded Michael Abrams, Managing Director Lollapalooza 2003
