Hotmail and Instant Messenger from ninemsn now available on Optus post paid mobile

25 August 2003

Sydney, Australia

Hotmail, the world’s most popular free, web based email service and Instant Messenger, (IM) are now available via short message service (SMS) on Optus post paid mobile.

The Mobile Hotmail and Mobile Instant Messenger service will allow Optus post paid mobile customers to browse their Hotmail Inbox and receive and send messages through their mobile phones.

The service, enabled in part by Mobileway, a leader in deploying and managing secure mobile transactions, will also enable IM conversations between PCs and Optus post paid mobile phones. Users will have access to their ‘buddy’ list and the ability to send and receive Instant Messages.

Filters allow the user to control which Hotmail e-mail messages can be sent to their mobile phone by selecting from a range of criteria including subject, sender and email address. This process helps users to focus on the most important messages while on the move and avoid spam.

“Having access to Mobile Hotmail and IM when you’re on the go makes it that much easier to stay in touch and access information without being tied to your PC,” said Niamh Collins, Director of Wireless, ninemsn.

“This kind of mobility, flexibility and connectivity is increasingly important for Australians who want to make the most of their PC based communication services no matter where* they are or what device they are using.”

“The roll out of Mobile Hotmail and Mobile Instant Messenger to Optus post-paid mobile customers is another key milestone for ninemsn as we expand our popular services to mobile devices,” said Collins.

“Putting SMS and Hotmail together is a powerful combination. With the new Mobile Hotmail and IM service, we think our post paid customers will get even more from their mobile experience,” said Allan Robertson, Director, Optus Mobile Partners.

Scott Hannan, country manager, Mobileway, said “We are pleased to be a key partner in this project to bring Mobile Hotmail and Mobile Instant Messenger to market for Optus. The confidence that Optus demonstrated in deploying the ninemsn mobile service to its post paid customers with Mobileway further shows our capability for point-to-point secured delivery and our abilities to monetize mobile transactions.”

Optus post paid mobile users will be charged 25 cents (GST inclusive) for each text message sent from and to their handsets. To activate the service, Optus post paid mobile customers need to have a Hotmail or Microsoft Passport account. Registration and further information can be obtained from: http://ninemsn.com.au/mobilehotmail
