THE LATEST WAVE IN ‘MOVING PICTURES’: MOBILEWAY & OPLAYO DELIVER COMPLETE MOBILE VIDEO SOLUTION
Strategic Partnership Between Leaders Makes Mobile Video a Viable Global Channel
23 February 2004 3GSM Congress, Cannes
Mobileway, the leading Global Mobile Solutions provider, today launched a global end-to-end mobile video service resulting from a strategic partnership with the leading mobile video specialist, Oplayo. The service offering provides brand and content owners with a means to reach not only High-tier Symbian Smart phone owners, but also existing Java™ handset owners across the globe.
This breakthrough marks the first step in making mobile video truly mainstream, offering content owners the chance to create fully-branded mobile portals and marketers the capability to offer advertising-on-demand to today’s increasingly mobile consumers. Granting content owners the capability to reach fan-bases across the world is particularly compelling for media and entertainment players wanting to stream the trailer for their latest movie or for TV broadcasters looking to extend their program formats into the hands of the mobile user.
Mobileway has fully integrated Oplayo’s video technology into its application platform to offer a complete end-to-end service, including: encoding and conversion of video files; hosting of content; branding the player; management of video streaming and downloads; play list creation, management and updates; and delivery of the video player and billing via premium SMS.
The end-to-end mobile video solution offers two options, video streaming or video download:
- The streaming solution introduces the concept of branded content portals on the mobile phone. A user requests subscription via text message to a brand’s mobile content service. In return he receives a message triggering both payment and download of the branded player and portal to his phone. These portals feature video play lists as well as audio play lists, along with other content download packages such as MMS, Java™ games or text-based information services. All of these are dynamic lists capable of being updated from the network upon user request.
- The Video download service is more suitable for single purchases and ideal as a strategic element of broader marketing campaigns. Upon direct user request a Vidlet, comprising the player and the clip together, can be delivered and billed directly to the user’s phone. Upon receipt the video clip will play on opening. The vidlet can be encoded to allow unlimited access to the clip by the user or can be configured to limit the number of times it can be viewed.
Additional security features integral to Oplayo’s video technology include: the flexibility to offer ‘send to a friend’ capability where content can either be encoded to enable users to forward clips on to friends or alternatively ‘forward locked’ to secure published content against redistribution and reuse by unauthorized service providers; and the introduction of user authorization or play list PIN codes to enable parental control and age verification for adult content.
“For brands and broadcasters alike building a creative, ongoing dialogue with customers is the key to increased mindshare and profitability" explained Russ Shaw, Chief Executive Officer, Mobileway Inc. “At Mobileway, we strive to provide these companies with simple yet effective ways to touch their customers, offering them end-to-end solutions to create and deploy mobile content packages across the globe. Adding mobile video capability to our global, full service portfolio strengthens our leadership in this field even further and I am delighted that we have collaborated with a strong partner like Oplayo to provide this. This is a significant step forward and one which truly paves the way for the mobile phone to complement TV, radio and cinema as a unique broadcast channel.”
Philip Bourchier O’Ferrall, managing director, Oplayo EMEA commented, “One of the main attractions of the mobile phone as a distribution channel for content owners is the fact that it remains the most direct way to interact with today’s increasingly elusive consumers. Through this partnership with Mobileway, we can offer content owners video distribution in domestic markets and, thanks to Mobileway’s global presence, access to consumers worldwide. This is a compelling and exciting prospect for the many global brands looking to extend their presence across all forms of media.”
The first international marketing campaign employing this mobile video solution went live in early February; no further details can be given at this time.
