UTUSAN & MOBILEWAY KEEP MALAYSIANS UP TO DATE WITH ELECTION NEWS VIA SMS
New SMS Service to Enable Mobile Subscribers in Malaysia to Receive Round-the-clock General Election Updates
18 March 2004 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
For the first time in Malaysia, mobile subscribers can receive up to the minute information on the forthcoming elections on 21 March 2004 by subscribing to the Utusan SMS Election Service. The alerts service has been a joint development between the Utusan Group and leading mobile solutions provider, Mobileway
More than 10 million voters will decide the fate of Malaysia’s parliament on 21st March, in the country’s 11th general election. Following the nomination of the candidates on 13 March, the parties have little more than a week to convince the country’s voters to select the 219 representatives and 505 lawmakers making up the federal parliament and state assemblies for a new five-year term.
This SMS service, based on Mobileway’s mobile application platform provides Utusan with a user friendly, web-based solution. Utusan can simply upload the latest election news or results onto a web page and instantly push this content to mobile subscribers.
The service was launched on 8 March 2004, mobile subscribers opt-in to the service by texting in to a short code “33833” and can choose any of the following services:
* News updates throughout the whole election period
* Hourly updates during the Election day
* Post-election results as they are counted constituency-by-constituency
* Information on demand as elections results are release
* Updates or results on any of the individual Assembly states.
“Gone are the days where consumers passively rely on TV or newspapers to get information,“ said Dr.Ahmad Hairi, Chief Technology Officer, Utusan Group. “As consumers become increasingly mobile the need to satisfy their insatiable appetite for real-time information at their fingertips keeps on growing. As a media powerhouse, we are always on the lookout for novel solutions to excite and reach our consumers. This partnership with Mobileway is a fine example of how we continue to achieve this through innovative ways of delivering information to our consumers, even when they are on the go.”
Mobileway has also developed a content management tool for Utusan, based on the company’s advanced Content Manager platform. This web-based tool allows Utusan to simply upload SMS and WAP content, and manage the download by setting relevant keywords to enable subscribers to request mobile content. Presently, Utusan is using the Mobileway Content Manager to provide to their subscribers value-added services such as download of operator logos, ringtones, information on demand and picture messaging. These services are normally featured in their newspaper, Utusan Malaysia and in lifestyle and entertainment magazines like URTV and Hai.
Through Mobileway’s unrivalled global delivery network and local presence, Utusan is able to seamlessly reach all of Malaysia’s mobile population. Mobileway is also the only company with the ability to collect and settle funds across all mobile service providers. This saves Utusan the arduous task of negotiating individual billing agreements with all of the mobile operators; comparing traffic discrepancies and sharing the revenues across the wireless value chain once payment has been received from the mobile operators.
Matthew Talbot, Head of Asia, Full Service of Mobileway Asia Pacific commented, ”This latest partnership is further testament to the success of Mobileway's partnership with leading media brands like Utusan to develop full mobilization services for mobile subscribers in Malaysia. This also saves media and content providers the onerous task of negotiating often complex billing agreements and increases the speed to market new services – in this case, the Utusan SMS Election Service.”
“Building on the company's invaluable legacy of direct network connections, Mobileway is achieving great success and meeting our customers' and partners' ever-increasing demands for proven expertise and the delivery of full service, end-to-end solutions as well as delivery of distribution, application and settlement services over the company’s global infrastructure they require to increase ARPU," Matthew added.
