MSN Messenger Over SMS brings mobility to MSN users– A first in Asia
12 January 2004 Singapore
MSN, a leading online destination with more than 350 million users worldwide, today announced the deployment of a new service, in partnership with three major Singapore telecommunications companies M1, SingTel and StarHub, allowing consumers to enjoy more mobility than ever before. The service, enabled in part by Mobileway, a leader in deploying and managing secure mobile transactions, will allow consumers to send and receive messages using MSN Messenger via a mobile phone and Singapore is the first market to provide 100 percent coverage of this service in Asia.
The MSN Messenger over SMS service is a form of two-way SMS and allows users and their MSN Messenger buddies to keep in touch with each other at any time from any where via a PC and a mobile phone that supports the SMS technology using M1, SingTel, and StarHub services.
When a user is logged on to MSN Messenger on a PC, he/she can keep in touch with family and friends wherever they may be via a mobile phone simply by creating and saving a mobile MSN Messenger number for each of their buddies.
Mr Hui Weng Cheong, SingTel’s Vice-President (Consumer Products), said: “SMS is already one of the most popular mobile data platforms among our mobile phone subscribers. Working with MSN on the MSN Messenger over SMS service will provide them with another value-added application and enhance their text messaging experience.”
Also keen on the new move that will give customers an edge in communications and mobility is M1's Sales & Marketing Director, Mr. P. Subramaniam. "The ease of connecting our SMS savvy customers to the Internet seamlessly, demonstrates how mobility and communications are progressing. We are excited about the new MSN Messenger over SMS service as it will enable our customers to communicated better with their family and friends."
StarHub’s Assistant Vice President for Corporate Mobile, Ms Goh Li Li, said, “StarHub is pleased to extend this service to our rapidly growing mobile customer base. This partnership with MSN to launch the MSN Messenger over SMS service on the StarHub network is another way to show how we are proactively seeking ways to enhance our customers’ mobile lifestyle. StarHub customers will be able to stay in constant touch with their friends and loved ones, who use the MSN service, even when they are on the move.”
“People of all ages use MSN Messenger to communicate daily with friends, family and colleagues, and this new service, MSN Messenger/Hotmail Over SMS will give our customers a new form of freedom, interaction and mobility. We are pleased to be able to partner with the major telecommunications companies, M1, SingTel and StarHub to bring such a convenient, on-the-go service to our customers in Singapore,” said Shriram Adukoorie, Director of MSN South Asia.
“We are pleased and excited to be part of this important milestone deal with the three major Singapore telecommunications companies and MSN. The confidence that M1, SingTel and StarHub demonstrated in deploying the MSN Messenger Over SMS service with Mobileway further shows our capability for point-to-point secured delivery and our abilities to monetize mobile transactions,” said Cyrille Even, General Manager and Vice President of Mobileway Asia Pacific.
The popularity of MSN Messenger has grown significantly since its launch in September 1999 and today 110 million people around the world use MSN Messenger of which 14 million people use it across Asia. MSN Messenger continues to expand at a rapid rage of 60 percent each year across the region.
